Guam - CBS is reporting that the Department of Defense is considering ordering mandatory departure of all American military personnel and their families who are in the areas of Japan threatened by radiation. But U.S. Forces Japan has not received any official word at this point.

Sergeant Major Stephen Valley says he is aware of the CBS report, but he has no information regarding a mandatory evacuation for the military in Japan being discussed at this point. He added that military dependents so far have had the option of participating in the voluntary departure program that began this past weekend.

The decision, according to CBS, was considered after potassium iodide pills were distributed to service members of the USS George Washington after the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier abruptly left Yokosuka, Japan on Monday morning to save itself from radioactive contamination.

Concerns were raised after the shift in the wind blowing increased amounts of radioactivity south over Tokyo toward the American bases at Yokosuka and Atsugi.
