All-clear up at Northern Wastewater Plant

Guam - The road to Two Lovers Point has since been re-opened. According to Guam Homeland Security Spokesperson Alyssa Benito, the all-clear was given at around 8:30 this morning. The area was blocked-off to traffic and the public because of a chlorine leak discovered at the Northern Wastewater Treatment Plant.

GWA says the problem identified was a valve failure on the discharge line. Benito says the contractor, Veolia Environmental Service, contained the leak. "Veolia contractors used a chemical called sodium hydroxide and what they did was they mixed it with the chlorine and it converted to bleach, so that's the reason why we were active so long was that the process takes really long," she said.

She adds that GWA will plan and prepare how to deal with the remaining four tanks to ensure there are no chlorine gas leaks.
