Guam - The Guam Police Department has started the accreditation process for the agency. GPD Captain Mark Charfauros says they will be sending two officers to Maryland next month to attend accreditation training. He says they are seeking a three-year accreditation so that they can have training standards that's in line with the national level as well as instill the confidence of the public in the department.

He adds that they will then make a self evaluation before requesting the accrediting agency to inspect their facilities and operations. Charfauros told KUAM News, "We're going to start out with the Training & Staff Section and getting that accredited and hopefully expanding out from there, so what we are looking at if everything falls in place within the year after return from the accreditation course we are hoping on getting accreditation up and rolling."

The Guam Fire Department is also in the process of taking the necessary steps to get its agency accredited as well.
