Guam - In an effort to convene the first meeting of the Guam First Commission, Governor Eddie Calvo has written letters to the Guam Chamber of Commerce and the Department of Chamorro Affairs. The governor must appoint four members to the Commission, one of whom must come from the Chamber.

In a letter to Chamber president David Leddy, the governor asks for the Chamber's nomination of an appointee who will sit on the Commission.  The governor must also include a member of a Chamorro rights organization who has been selected by the combined memberships of the various organizations. Governor Calvo has asked Chamorro Affairs president Joseph Cameron to identify the organizations and coordinate an election.

The island's chief executive has committed to convening the Guam First Commission to gather input on the military buildup and other issues facing the island. Island lawmakers have called on the governor to convene the Commission prior to signing off on the Programmatic Agreement, which Calvo has said could happen before he leaves to Washington, DC later this month.
