Guam - The lack of Chamorro language teachers has become a problem for the Barrigada campus of Untalan Middle School. Parents have raised concern that their children are not getting the proper education, as they say the there is no permanent teacher in the classroom. Stakeholders feel the problem is resulting in the students getting low grades and they want answers.
However, Department of Education deputy superintendent Arlene Unpingco admits that the shortage is a district-wide problem, saying, "I recommend that they meet with the school administrator so that they can address the individual concerns relative to their child."
In the meantime, Chamorro studies administrator Ron Laguana says they are planning events at the University of Guam to persuade students to become Chamorro teachers.
