Mormon Church official on Guam

by Sabrina Salas Matanane

Guam - One of the foremost leaders of the Church of Latter-Day Saints, also known as the Mormon Church, is on Guam this weekend from Salt Lake City, Utah to oversee the restructuring of the local chapter. Elder L Tom Perry, a member of the LDS Quorum of the 12 Apostles, arrived early this morning to help create what is known in the church as a stake, an administrative unit composed of multiple congregations.

"Before a mission person had the responsibility. Now the local leadership will take over. A stake president will be called. He'll be given the keys of authority to reside over this particular unit and then the whole organization will be in existence under a local unit instead of a mission president," he explained.

The Church of Latter-Day Saints has grown significantly in the past decades.  It now has more than 2,000 members in Guam and Saipan, and about 10,000 in all of Micronesia.
