Guam - With the discovery of black widow spiders and other invasive species found recently on items brought in from the U.S. West Coast, the Guam Customs and Quarantine Agency isn't taking the situation lightly. Director Colonel Dennis Santo Tomas says the agency has already established an Agricultural Security Task Force - a specialized team that researches, documents and issues bulletins on various invasive species that have arrived or have the potential of coming through Guam's ports of entry.
There is also a biosecurity working group that has developed a task force plan outlining the mission, personnel and equipment requirements, timelines and the delineation of responsibilities as Customs anticipates that more invasive species will be headed Guam's way with an increase in cargo activity.
Santo Tomas is urging lawmakers to help fund the initiative.
