17,000 protest in Japan outside Futenma

by Sabrina Salas Matanane

Guam - About 17,000 protesters formed a human chain outside Futenma Sunday, expressing their opposition to the government's plan to keep some of the facility on the island. Japan media are also reporting that Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama has extended the end of may deadline to make a decision on Futenma, and now plans to settle the matter around November of this year.

While it's remains unclear if the base can be relocated to Guam or the commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Japan Times reports that U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton will visit Japan on May 21 to discuss the Futenma relocation with government officials.
