Guam - Once taking a hard-line stance that the Marine Corps Futenma Air Base must be moved out of Okinawa altogether - possibly even to Guam or Tinian - Japan Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama has had a change of heart. The Japan Times is reporting the official said it was impossible to move all parts of the air station out of Okinawa.
It's the first time since coming into office in September that Hatoyama has shown any sign of backing down from his position. Hatoyama said, "Realistically speaking, it is impossible. We're facing a situation that is realistically difficult to move everything out of the prefecture from the standpoint of deterrence."
A report released by the Government Accountability office noted that if the Futenma issue is not resolved, the relocation of the Marines from Okinawa to Guam will not occur.
