Federal judge denies acquittal for Ernesto Verdera

Guam - District Court Chief Judge Frances Tydingco-Gatewood denied a motion for acquittal that was filed by Ernesto Verdera.  He was found guilty last year of trying to smuggle almost a million dollars out of the United States in checked baggage, but was acquitted for the conspiracy charge.

In her decision, the judge shot down the defense's arguments that Verdera didn't know he was required to report the money he was transporting.  Tydingco-Gatewood, however, said he should and could have known and it was reasonable for the jury to infer his guilt as he went to great lengths to conceal the large amount of cash in his luggage.
