GW ends JFK's title hopes

The George Washington Geckos hosted the JFK Islanders in the semifinals at the GW Field.  Things started out sloppy for both teams, as turnovers off interceptions and fumbles, plagued both their efforts on each of their offensive drives, keeping the game scoreless for the entire 1st quarter.

Defense came thru for the Geckos in the 10th minute of the 2nd quarter, as league co-MVP Stephen Santos intercepted a pass off islanders quarterback Jacob Torres, returning the interception for a 50-yard touchdown as he worked his way in and out of traffic. They converted the extra 2 points as they went ahead 8-0.

The Islanders, however, answered back on their pursuing drive, as they marched their way into the Geckos' 15-yard line, but defense proved too strong, as GW kept the Islanders scoreless throughout the 1st half.

In the 3rd quarter, both teams played tough defense, stopping the running and the passing game. The Islanders on 4th and 2 caught the Geckos off guard at the tail end of the 3rd quarter, as Jacob Torres connected with Gabriel Terlaje off the fake punt. Terlaje would wind up taking the Islanders into the Geckos territory, setting up JFK for a touchdown.  Matthew Javier made that a reality as he caught a 10-yard pass and cutting the Geckos lead down to 2 points.

The Geckos didn't let that stop their drive to score, as Jesse Manglona handled business, running for a 20-yard touchdown and boosting GW to the 14-6 lead. JFk had chances at tying things up late in the 4th quarter, but offensive turnovers haunted their efforts as GW's defense came up big.

Stephen Santos sealed the deal in the last 2 minutes of the game as he caught a slant pass and streaked his way to a 20-yard touchdown, as the Geckos held on strong for the 22-6 win.
