Quarterfinals of this year's girls volleyball season wrapped up last night at gyms around the island, with teams making some surprises. The Notre Dame Royals survived an early scare by the JFK Islanders at the Guam Sports Complex, losing the 1st set 21-25.

ND managed to regroup and take a big 17-9 lead in the 2nd set behind good teamwork and patience to hold on for the win 25-18. With errors on both ends of the court awarding each team easy points the 3rd and decisive set was anyone's game.

The Royals and Islanders battled for every point, diving for digs and challenging shots at the net. Mary Gillan and Erica Quichocho stepped up and made sure that the Royals wouldn't suffer an upset as they helped contribute in the 3rd set win, 25-18.   With the win the Royals now face the defending champs the GW Geckos in the semifinals at UOG this Thursday at 7pm.

Also moving on to the semis will be the St. John's Knights, after they upset the Academy of Our Lady of Guam Cougars in 2 straight sets, 25-19, 25-18. They will face the Guam High Panthers in the earlier game at 5:30pm Thursday at the Field House, after the Panthers up ended the Lady Sharks 25-23, 22-25, 25-23.
