Hats Off!

Hats off!
Along the street there comes
A blare of bugles, a ruffle of drums,
A flash of color beneath the sky:
Hats off!
The flag is passing by!

Blue and crimson and white it shines,
Over the steel-tipped, ordered lines.
Hats off!
The colors before us fly;
But more than the flag is passing by.

Sea-fights and land-fights, grim and great,
Fought to make and to save the State:
Weary marches and sinking ships;
Cheers of victory on dying lips;

Days of plenty and years of peace;
March of a strong land's swift increase;
Equal justice, right, and law,
Stately honor and reverend awe;

Sign of a nation, great and strong
Toward her people from foreign wrong:
Pride and glory and honor,--all
Live in the colours to stand or fall.

Hats off!
Along the street there comes
A blare of bugles, a ruffle of drums;
And loyal hearts are beating high:
Hats off!
The Flag is passing by!

To my loving husband:

The time is drawing near before you depart from your love ones as you go and serve our country. You've always had that urge in you to give or do something in return, for our freedom to be free. Well now you have that chance. I am very proud of you and for your success in life. You have worked your hardest to be the kind of person that you are today, not only to your family, but to yourself. As you head on your way, remember to be safe and come home, so we can carry on from where we left off. I will miss you so much!! Take care of yourself and I love you lots!!
Love your Wife,
Jenny Naputi

Hafa Adai KUAM,

My name is Patty Manalisay Harris, a Chamorro who was born and raised in California, but with strong heart-ties to the beautiful island of Guam and its people.

I came across your website last night while cruising the internet in search of Guamanian soldiers serving in Kuwait/Iraq. My husband army reserve unit, based in Pleasanton, California was activated/deployed in January and we are both very involved in the 91st Division HHC’s FRG (family readiness group). We are fortunate, however, that my husband is still doing duty in the continental USA, but we are supporting our troops worldwide. While helping to support family members of deployed solders during the last few months, we discovered that there is an organization called “Operation MOM” that originated from northern California. Operation MOM was founded by two mothers who sons are in the Marine Corps, currently serving in Iraq but also served in Desert Storm. They send “a little bit of home” in a really nice care package to our soldiers serving overseas. However, due to the DOD (Department of Defense) restrictions imposed during this war, they are only able to send care packages to soldiers that they have actual addresses for.

I have spent the last few weeks gathering items and money to help with the Operation MOM effort. I have approached businesses and individuals and was able to purchase over $500 worth of hygiene and snack products (nothing in comparison to what Operation MOM has in their warehouses already!) and about 200 shoe boxes from local shoe stores. Yesterday I spent 5 hours assembling care packages (about 150 or so) and am about to leave to help do more this morning. Care packages that we sent yesterday included: socks, tshirt, washcloth, sunscreen, chapstick, bandaids, batteries, shampoo, soap, razor, shaving cream, aspirin, baby wipes, antibacterial gel, snack items (jerky, gum, granola bars, powerbars, candies, corn nuts), a small nerf football (to play with and then pass on to an Iraqi child), crossword puzzles, playing cards, a handmade card by an elementary school child and a note from Operation MOM with a poem about how much they are missed.

Why am I writing to you? I want to find out if you can post a message to the families of Guamanian soldiers to inform them of this awesome group. We need more names and APO addresses of soldiers to send packages to. It does not matter which branch of the service, Operation MOM just wants to send them a little reminder that we care about them. Operation MOM WILL NOT sell the names nor will they give to any other organizations. This is strictly a way to reach more solders overseas. They have received numerous calls and emails about how much this means to the troops and have been requested to send more, and often! I would love to include soldiers from Guam in the list of recipients.

Addresses can be added directly on Operation MOM’s website (www.operationmom.org) or sent to me via email. If they are sent to me, I can forward directly to the Livermore group leader (that is the group I have been helping). Operation MOM has a section on their website that allows anyone to sponsor a package (only $10 for shipping, care items have already been donated) and, I believe, indicate who it should be sent to.

Let’s tell our Guamanian/Chamorro soldiers that we are supporting them all the way!

Kind regards,
Patty Harris

P.S. I am attaching a card that my son, 8 years old, made for one of the soldiers. I hope you can view it.

" A Military Wife's Prayer"
Give me the greatness of heart to see,
The difference between duty and his love for me
Give me the understanding so that I may know.
When duty calls him, he must go.
Give me a task to do each day,
To fill the time when he's away.
When he is in a foreign land,
Keep him safe in your loving hands.
And Lord, when duty is in the field,
Please protect him and be his shield.
And Lord, when deployment is so long,
Please stay with me and keep me strong

Loving you always,

This is a picture of my oldest brother Sgt. Alvin Anthony Pereda Manglona. He was deployed couple of weeks ago. The first time I heard he will be deployed I was scared and I didn’t know what to think. The day before his departure to Kuwait was the day I realize that this war is real and there’s absolutely nothing I can do to prevent my brother from leaving to Kuwait. I attend a catholic school and pray pretty much every hour of the day. The day of “the moment of truth” we had a prayer for peace. After the prayer one of my teachers discuss the war with my class. She told us what we should expect and how we can react. She also told us that miracles happen to those who believe. I believe my brother is a strong man and he achieves his goals. I believe serving his country is a big goal for him and he is more than likely to achieve it.

For all the families who have their loved ones serving our country I would like to say stay strong. Know that your not alone and don’t underestimate the power of prayer. God bless you and your loved ones.

For our men and women fighting for their country I would like to say WE ARE PROUD! Just take care of yourselves, each other, and hurry home. We love and miss all of you. Thank you!

Love always, Melissa Jean

Hafa Adai, from Ft. Lewis Washington. To my mom and dad, Juile & Rodney Cruz just want to say that I am doing fine, and in good hands. To family and friends in Guam, hello and that I miss being there under the sun and coconut trees. It is time we all should be praying for all our relatives in the Middle East. Let's not forget to put those yellow ribbons up, and show are true island wide support for our troops, and behalf of the armed forces soldiers we want to thank those who have supported us and still are. Thank you, and God bless all of us. "Freedom is not Free"

Hafa Adai,

I'd just like to say thank you to all my friends and family whom have sent messages of love and encouragement and well wishes and prayers during my current deployment. I am especially grateful to my wife Sharlene and our precious children for putting up with all this. I have been away since August of last year and was only home briefly for the holidays.

I would like to thank the Lord above for keeping my personnel and me safe so far. I am very proud to be serving our country. Every time I come across someone who has known another Chamoru in the military or who has been to the Marianas, they always have great things to say about the Chamoru people. The Chamoru people have a great reputation in the U.S. military and rightly so. Every other Chamoru I have known in the service has done and continues to do great and wonderful things for our country.

Barnes, Were she displayed her leadership skills by her understatement: “A lot went on today, so pay attention”, as she gathered with staff officers for the nightly battle update briefing. http://www.usnews.com/usnews/news/iraq/articles/army030320.htm

There is a Combat Veteran on island that needs to be recognized. His name is LTC Tommy Aflague. He has served on active duty as an infantry officer. While serving on active duty, he has had two combat tours, one in Grenada in 1983 which was called Operation "Urgent Fury" and then serving in Desert Storm in 1991.

He has served in the infantry for 22 yrs. He has served in many capacities in the infantry. He was a platoon leader, company executive officer and assistant operations officer with the 82nd Airborne Division. He was a battalion adjutant and then commanded a mechanized infantry company in Baumholder, Germany during the cold war. He taught and trained soldiers and units in tactics as a observer controller at the Combat Maneuver Training
Center at Hohenfels, Germany. He is also a qualified Psychological Operations officer.

He is also Ranger qualified, a master parachutist and has been awarded the Combat Infantry Badge.

He has served our country and island well and with pride. He is a modest officer that only cares about soldiers. He is one of the most respected officers in our organization. He is currently serving as the Battalion Commander for the 1st Battalion, 294th Infantry (Light) in the Guam Army National Guard. I hope you will be able to shed some light on this fine
officer.

Hi my name is Rose Marie Sandoval-Damron and i would like to let all service men and women know that they are in my prayers allways and that I am PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN because of their efforts! Too all the families of the service men and women I know you are going thru a rough time. I have two brothers, a best friend and my husband serving in the navy; and  also lost a best friend on the USS COLE ( RONCHESTER SANTIAGO) on OCT.12,2000 who was like a brother too me and with all of this going on and one brother in kuwait I also understand the fears and worries everyone is going thru. I always remember what my brothers told me after the murder of our best friend RON on the USS COLE they said this is what we sighned up for and we are ready to serve our country; but too always remember that as long as we have FAITH in GOD everything will be fine! I know nothing could ever bring our best friend back and just watching those men and women on tv brings all those feelings back; but I think of my best friend as a HERO then, now, and allways!! because he served with no hesitation as all our service men and women!!

I am currently servicing with the 36th APS from McChord AFB, WA. A couple of local boys are deployed to places classified to the public for their protection. This of course is ironic due to the media's participation in the front lines in the war. The following names are also assigned to the 36th APS out of McChord AFB, WA.
SSgt Greg Iglesias currently residing in Federal Way SRA Dan Blas currently residing in Rochester Both are married and left behind their families to answer the call of duty to serve the mission of a great cause. I am proud of these two and of their
origin of past assignment from the fighting force of the 44th APS in Guam. The 44th APS has five (5) former members assigned to the 36th APS and serving proudly in continuing commitment of military services.

Three others including myself are on ready alert to mobilize at a moments notice. SRA Jonathan Duenas currently residing in Everett, SRA Katharine Dela-Cruz currently residing in Spokane. We encourage the people of Guam to support and continue to support the troops and pray for their safe return to their families. May their sacrifices be appreciated and recognized in keeping Peace in our world. The lost of lives in this endeavor will never be replaced but will only be honored and remembered for their unselfishness for the rest of us to enjoy their freedom and peace.

I write in laymen terms so everyone to read and understand the true feelings of this war. Though none of them wanted this war, but their loyalty and honor to fulfill their oath in keeping our freedom and peace in our democratic world made step forward to be accounted for.

Lets not forget the lives who were willingly sacrificed for our freedom and live a productive lives.

Stand up and be accounted for, be unselfish so others can also enjoy the same freedom we have. Wipe any negativism from your lives and show the troops their sacrifices of heroism. I am proud to serve no matter where I am or where I serve. I am ready, packed, will freely go where I am ordered to go. As my brother and his wife both serving, left their children to fight this war, so will I leave my family to fulfill my duties as a peacekeeper and freedom fighter. I will be appreciative of your support and believe in me and the troops.

I pray everyday to the Lord that he will be with my son and all the troops out in kuwait at war; my tears never wants to dry up; but when it drys up the Lord hears my prayer I know that the Lord is out there with my son all the troops. Everytime i watch the news it just makes me cry knowing i can't see my son in TV and what is happening is he hurt or what im going crazy already. Everytime I really feel that way I call upon the Lords name. I know that when he told me on his last phone conversation he told me that mom not to worry I'll be home soon gotta take care of some bussiness for our country and that many prayers is all he and the troops need well; I know that he and the troops are all getting all the prayers. Son please come home to your family and your new bundle of joy you have not seen in person as I continue to pray to the Lord of God for a safe journey home for Jon and all the troops in kuwait serving their country. I am Proud of our Country
the Beautiful land of the Free..
Where we stand side by side
and Show our Dignity...

Where Our Troops fight to Protect
Our Young and Our Old..
Who give us all Pride
To stand strong and be Bold...

Each day that you wake
Bow your head and Pray..
thank GOD for our Government
that WE are free today!!!

So Now, Smile at your neighbor, or shake a hand
Because our Soldiers are fighting..
to Protect our Land...

We are given life to Treasure
