KUAM News has confirmed through the family of Austin "Sonny" Shelton that the longtime businessman, former senator and former public auditor died earlier today. The family is not revealing the cause of his death at this time and thanks the community for their understanding during their time of grief.

Shelton was released earlier this year from federal prison after serving his sentence for his conviction on numerous federal charges, including bid rigging, wire fraud and bribery. The conviction stemmed from his stint as Department of Parks & Recreation director under the Carl Gutierrez administration.

Prior to his conviction, Shelton enjoyed a long local career in both of Guam's public and private sectors, serving in various roles within the Government of Guam, and starting up several successful entrepreneurial projects.
