The annual Relay for Life is a time when people come together and take a stand against cancer. It's a time when you celebrate survivorship and a time to reflect on the life and memory of those who have passed on. The American Cancer Society's event is one Delores Lee holds close to her heart, as her mother was diagnosed with cancer eight years ago.

Her mother's battle with the disease has been her motivation to join the fight. "You would never wish for this to happen to anyone in your family," she said. You would never wish this to happen to yourself, but it's made us stronger as a family. Our faith has always been strong but that has deepened even more. It's always helped us to see how supportive everyone is and just how supportive this community is."

It's this community support that has Delores giving back as a volunteer with the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. She'll be there this Friday walking right by her mother's side. "My mom will be there with the other survivors," she beamed. "It's so wonderful to interact with them and hear their stories and to let them know that they inspire strength and inspire hope when they share those stories."

Every year thousands of island residents from all walks of life make their lapse around the George Washington High School track in Mangilao and participate in the emotional luminaria lighting ceremony. Delores says it goes to show how cancer affects just about everyone in one way or another, adding, "I don't there is any person here on Guam who can't say they don't know anyone who has had cancer or a friend who's relative has had cancer. Cancer has touched all of us at one point in our life."

The Relay for Life is scheduled for this Friday at the GW field beginning at 7pm and ending at 7 Saturday morning.
