Established in April 1968, earlier today the Guam Council of the International Reading Association celebrated its 40th anniversary. Past president Nel Pendon-Limtiaco says that the local council began with just 17 people dedicated to improving the quality of reading instruction and literacy development. Now, the Guam IRA has over 300 involved educators, parents, students and community members.

"It'S a common goal," Pendon-Limtiaco said. "We all want to make sure that we promote literacy and that everyone is literate. We want to make sure everyone is self-sufficient and we have the same vision."

Throughout the year Guam IRA members learn about the latest techniques and reading programs to further advance literacy on island and in the Pacific Region.
