Earlier this week the Office of the Public Auditor released a report on the finances of the Guam Waterworks Authority. A portion of that report detailed how $6.3 million dollars is owed in fire hydrant receivables and how the Government of Guam is actually tasked with paying for those services. According to GWA interim general manager John Benavente, an inventory and repair of fire hydrants is being conducted before they make a decision to actually start billing on them."What I'm trying to do is reassess all the receivables in our books to see if in reality they are numbers that we can support, and so we really have not done much fire hydrant repair in the past. And we started last April to begin the whole process of fixing the hire hydrants on the island, so therefore at least we're getting better numbers verses what it really costs to maintain the fire hydrants," Benavente explained. "Once we get those numbers certainly I'll be heading to the Legislature working with the fire department to try and get them to pay fire hydrant service.:The official adds there could also be a possibility that GWA will just wipe off the $6.3 million fire hydrant service receivable from its books.View the report at GuamOPA.org
