It looks like the Government of Guam will be treated like everyday ratepayers. After hearing the options presented by the Guam Power Authority's management during Tuesday's working session, the Consolidated Commission on Utilities made the decision to begin disconnecting public streetlights. CCU chairman Simon Sanchez says the decision was made because the government cannot pay its delinquent streetlight bill."After years of attempting to seek repayment collaboratively, the [Guam Power] Authority is faced with no choice but to apply its customer service policy in a non-discriminatory manner," Sanchez explained of the decision. With public notices going out this week, the utility agency intends to begin the disconnections as early as next week Monday. If all streetlights go out, reconnection fees could ring up to $375,000 - just for 15,000 streetlights.
