F.B. Leon Guerrero Middle School in Yigo, the "Home of the Hawks", made the dreaded Top 10 list of the island's most underperforming campuses. And two of the major issues cited were the restrooms in the E Wing and the locker rooms in the school's gymnasium. First, the restrooms. Custodian Dan Tydingco says the boys and girls restrooms were cited for sanitary concerns, showing stalls and walls littered with graffiti. But, he says, that has been fixed.

"There was graffiti in here. It's pretty much cleaned up. The stocking of the toilet tissue and paper towels (which this is a community restroom. we were having problems trying to maintain it, but now we have someone monitoring it all the time now," he told KUAM News. Like all the other schools we visited, the school did not have enough soap, paper towels and toilet paper dispensers.

In fact, school officials even purchased ten out of 80 dispensers out of their own pockets to cover some of the restrooms. In addition, Tydingco says they are currently waiting for materials to replace a missing sink. Next we take you to the locker rooms, said to lack proper ventilation. So far, Tydingco says maintenance workers were able to repair leaking sinks and toilets, and replace doors and ceiling panels. He says they are just waiting for the materials to be delivered to their school.

Also on the list is Yona school M.U. Lujan Elementary, where the young Dragons learn. Principal Daisy Ramirez says 48 fire extinguishers are being refilled, and as for air conditioning units, contractor JRN has been working to fix them. A total of 92 units are above 78 degrees, while another 42 remain inoperable. As for dispensers, they too are currently lacking. "The dispensers were already ordered as of last week," noted Ramirez, with school aide Richard Mendiola adding, "As soon as they come in, we'll be able to install them and we'll be fine from there."

As for what maintenance workers are doing to address the citations, Mendiola says much work is being completed. "We have several leaks in the ceiling that they're working on right now, as far as the second level they're fencing up the second level," he explained. The fencing, he added, is being put up for safety concerns.

Meanwhile, Ramirez says she hopes with the bond money for capitol improvement projects and hopes to fix the recently condemned room, which had major leaks and moldy carpets. Along with that request, she hopes for the school to finally put in an elevator in order to become compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. For the last 37 years, the school hasn't had one.
