While Southern High School finally was brought back up to par and had its sanitary permit reinstated, the Maintenance Division of the Guam Public School System will be out and about addressing issues in the remaining nine public schools deemed unsafe and unsanitary by the attorney general and the GPSS Health and Safety Task Force. According to GPSS spokesperson Gerry Cruz, the maintenance crews are just waiting for the purchase orders to be cut in order to do the work. With the availability of funds from the bond from the passage of Bill 242, Cruz says they are waiting to cut purchase orders to fix the remaining schools. He explained, "You've got to understand that we've gone through a year of use and things break down and things need to be replaced especially the A/Cs, we need to maintain those systems out there. And hopefully with those bond monies, we can us that to fix those facility issues."Cruz says a huge chunk of the money will take care of air conditioning maintenance and repairs. Meanwhile, he says once the remaining nine schools are addressed, the crews will pay visits to the others. Aside from Southern High the top ten worst public schools are Harry S. Truman Elementary, J.P. Torres Alternative School, M.U. Lujan Elementary, P.C. Lujan Elementary, Price Elementary, Carbullido Elementary, Lyndon B. Johnson Elementary, D.L. Perez Elementary and F.B. Leon Guerrero Middle School.According to Cruz, once these schools are addressed maintenance crews will pay visits to other campuses.
