A press conference was held at the Antonio Unpingco Session Hall this morning in Hagatna to announce a change in leadership. The recent election of B.J. Cruz to fill the vacancy of the late senator Tony Unpingco changed the 29th Guam Legislature to a Democrat majority, however, a provision in the standing rules presented a challenge for that party to take over leadership positions because it required two Republicans to vote in favor of changing the rules - a situation that unlikely to occur.

Acting speaker Eddie Calvo announced that Senator Cruz will take over leadership of the Committee on Tourism, Maritime and Foreign Affairs, saying Cruz and Unpingco fought for the same causes, whether war reparations, being a champion of Chamorro pride, or the movement of U.S. Marines to Guam.

He added this is powerful committee that will deal with those issues.
