The Guam Police Department's Marine Patrol Unit, the Guam Fire Department's Hazardous Material Team, and other rescue officials were called to Cocos Island late this afternoon following a report of a suspicious container. (This was not part of the TOPOFF-4 homeland security exercises being conducted elsewhere on the island.)

According to officials from GPD's Agat Precinct, they received a call that a 20-liter container containing unknown chemicals and a foul smell was found on the southside of Cocos Island. Because of its location, emergency responders had to take a boat to the island to determine whether it posed a risk.

No evacuations have been ordered yet as officials try to determine the contents of the container and who is responsible for leaving it on the island resort.
