An increase in measles cases in Japan has put healthcare providers and customs officers on alert. Territorial epidemiologist Dr. Robert Haddock warns that measles cases from the Land of the Rising Sun could be coming to Guam in the coming weeks as a measles epidemic is spreading the Tokyo and Saitama prefectures.

The National Institute of Infectious Disease warns the measles are highly contagious and the number of patients this year could surpass the 280,000 recorded in the year 2001. Of more concern is the upcoming golden week when Guam sees an influx of Japanese tourists.

Symptoms of measles include a high fever, coughing and a runny nose.
