Pampered Pets, Part 2: Pappy Pierre
One pampered pooch is not only one of the rarest breeds of dogs on Guam, but lives in the lap of luxury that has absolutely no limits. Pappy Pierre comes from a rare French breed of dogs known as the Papillion. Pappy's owner, Eileen Palomo, says the dog's strongest characteristic is its beautiful butterfly ears that pappy was all too eager to show us by striking a pose on command.
Eileen says they spoil pappy as if he was their very own child. He's treated twice a month to the Cloud Nine Groomers pet salon ,where Pappy's fur gets trimmed and twirled, which could never be complete without his special "pawdicure". Not only does Pappy have an abundance of toys, for safety sake, he has his own doggy carseat and his own pet stairs to get to and from his bed and the couch.
Pappy is served only the best of dog food and treats, along with bottled water. And he gets to eat on his own TV tray adjacent to his favorite playmates, mom and dad. Pappy believes himself to be human, emulating everything his owners do. Said Eileen, "He always sleeps with us, he has to take a nap with us, if we get up to go to the restroom, he has to follow us. He's our little shadow and he only eats dinner when we sit down and eat dinner so he's more human than he is a dog."
Ironically, while Pappy is a great watchdog always alerting his owners when trouble is afoot, he's also the biggest baby as he loves being held as much as possible. So much so that when mom and dad are off-island, Pappy gains the audience of both a housesitter as well as a dogsitter. "You know," Eileen added, "it's not the same boarding your dog versus him being around humans. So we had a house sitter and a dog sitter so we're very fortunate that they both love animals."
And Eileen couldn't be prouder of the fact that Pappy placed in many of the categories during gain's last dog show, including winning first place for Best in the Papillion breed, first place for having the cutest of ears and third place for the toy group. As for treats outside the house, Eileen admits that besides going to grandma's, Pappy is treated to his favorite restaurant on Guam at least twice a month - engaging in McDonalds.
And because only special doges get special treatment, Pappy has his own set of special clothes for those special occasions. "He has his patriotic outfit because we're getting ready for 4th of July, he has his little raincoat for the rain, and of course you can't forget about Santa, so he believes in Santa."
But the most fun pappy has with his owners is smothering them with kisses, dancing to music and playing fetch, much of which his owners end up doing more than him, truth be told. Not falling in love with the oh-so-charming pappy, the Papillion is literally an impossibility, who promptly smothered me with kisses for saying so.
