KUAM.com wins national award for best news web site
They say that in show biz you know you're a hit when you've got commercial success, audience approval and critical acclaim. Guam's most popular online destination has made history - again. KUAM has been recognized for its excellence in developing interactive media by being awarded the 2006 National Edward R. Murrow Award for Best News Web Site (Small Market) from the Radio and Television News Directors Association.
As Guam's largest and most visited web site, KUAM.com features the widest array of new media content delivery and distribution services of any local news web site. In addition to our massive archive of printable news stories and multimedia exhibits, KUAM.com offers full-access search, podcasts, e-mail/mobile alerts, on-demand video, live and archived streaming video/audio, RSS syndication, wireless access, and portable headlines for personal web pages.
But enough with shining light on obvious accoutrement. What's significant is that this is the first time such an honor has been bestowed to a Guam broadcasting organization. I'm almost giddy in realizing that our little seven-year-old creation has not only become the most trafficked local site on the World Wide Web, it's now also the most decorated. We've won two straight regional E.R. Murrow Awards for web site excellence, representing affiliate stations in Guam, Hawaii, Nevada and California. In all, 55 news organizations won 80 awards in various categories out of an initial pool of 3,723 entries from 568 affiliates, networks and syndication services. KUAM over the last three years has won a total of five Murrows.
You can see the full list of the National Murrow Awards winners here. To be mentioned in the same breath as such heavy-hitters as CourtTV.com, WashingtonPost.com, ESPN and NBC News for outstanding broadcasting and electronic journalism is an amazing achievement for a small market station like ours. This is a great thing for Guam.
A mantra that we've adopted since our early days is that "We're not the people that brought the Web to Guam - We're the people that made it work." We've done this all for Guam's benefit, so to be acknowledged that we're exhibiting our island in a revolutionary way on a major scale is a true treat. With an audience of about 155,000 people locally and about 10% more than that number worldwide, it's a daunting responsibility, but one we welcome, and one at which we excel.
So while we've been fortunate to have commercial success and fan approval since Day 1, we've built a pretty sizable trophy case to house the accolades from our industry colleagues, too. But despite the gratitude we have for peer recognition, we wouldn't be anything without the usership, feedback, support and criticism of our online community.
So thanks to you, our valued audience, for helping to formally make us what we always knew it would be: the best.
