Guam to host anti-terrorism exercise in 2007
To show the nation that Guam is a safe place, the territory is expecting to hold one of the largest anti-terrorist exercises in the world. Guam homeland security advisor Frank Blas, Jr. says he has been meeting with his federal counterparts from the Department of Homeland Security. The exercise, known as TOPOFF, is expected to take place in October 2007.
"This is going to be a ten-day exercise," said Blas, "there's going to be a number of different programs and workshops leading up to these exercises that is going to involve every facet of the community, such as the media, when this event occurs, during and immediately after. We're going to show as a community we're able to do this."
Blas adds the exercise may involve up to 1,000 people either as participating in the exercise or as observers. The exercise has already attracted interest from Australia and Canada, as well as from several Asian and European countries.
