Governor's Office, GMH trustees to intervene in pharmacy debate

Now down to four pharmacists and a plan to cut pharmacy hours altogether, the Guam Memorial Hospital is in gridlock with the Civil Service Commission. GMH board of trustees chairman Phil Flores tells KUAM News that the board, along with the Governor's Office, is working "feverishly" to come up with a solution that will keep the pharmacy up and running.

A CSC staffer apparently ruffled some feathers this week by ordering an end to overtime and determining one contract illegal, an incident that Flores says makes for a situation now out of hand, and stems from a difference in perspective. "They want to follow the law, we interpret the law differently we don't believe that they necessarily have the authority that to do what they are saying they do, but we don't want to fight that fight; what we'd rather do is take healthcare professionals and administrators and let them be specialized by those who need them," Flores told KUAM News.

Flores expects an announcement from the Governor's Office early next week, he wouldn't elaborate on what specifically, but an announcement that intends to free GMH, the Depatment of Public Health, and the Department of Mental Health from Civil Service Commission hiring and procurement regulations.
