Hazy Shade of Winter: residents turn noses away from foul stench from volcanic ash
It's 200 miles to the north of Guam, but it sure smells like its right outside our front door. The foul odor blowing our way from the Anatahan volcano is causing a big stink. It's so bad the National Weather Service early Friday morning issued a Volcanic Haze and Ash Fall Advisory for Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan.
With such an advisory in effect, you are advised to take the following measures:
- If you, your child or elderly family members have respiratory problems, you should stay indoors and reduce physical exertion
- Small children with respiratory problems should also seek medical advice
- The public is also advised to avoid prolonged exposure to outdoor air when undertaking physical activity
- The public is also advised to cease all burning activities until air quality improves, delay hanging laundry outside, and wash down all metallic objects, plants and agricultural crops when conditions improve
The Department of Education in the meantime is also taking the necessary precautions to protect your children as they head to school next Monday. Here's a look at the guidelines they've issued:
- Outdoor recess has been suspended. Break times will be held indoors
- Lunch will still be served in the cafeteria, but for students who feel sick and want to remain indoors, support and access will be provided to these students
- Students and or employees with respiratory problems are advised to remain indoors. If they start to feel ill, they will be allowed to be dismissed
- All gym classes requiring outside activities will be suspended
