The late Edward McDonald Calvo will forever stand among the island's most prominent leaders and influential businessmen. Today at the Cathedral Basilica in Hagatna, the community paid their last respects to a man who touched their lives.

A former senator, prominent businessman and more importantly a loving father, son and brother to his family, thousands paid their last respects to Calvo. He was called to his rest last week Thursday. Among those bidding farewell was former governor Joseph Ada, who recalls Calvo as one of his favorite senators when Ada served as speaker for the 14th Guam Legislature.

Looking back, Ada noted how Calvo could not refuse anyone in need of assistance. "It's not in his vocabulary. He's wanting to help [sic]," he said.

Calvo's concern for the welfare of the island was also seen in the political arena. According to Ada, Calvo introduced and passed legislation to help improve the economy at a time when most of the money coming in to the territory was mostly dependent on the military. On a more personal level, Ada says Calvo was a man who knew how to lighten up any occasion by telling a joke or two.

He told KUAM News, "He's the kind of guy that would make you feel very comfortable. At times, he'll be serious but only when the occasion called for it, but he would always make things into something that will make you laugh and appreciate life, and that's the kind of guy that I really appreciate and I like his company - he's just a guy. He's just a jolly guy!"

And it is Calvo's personality that Ada says has enabled him to be among the island's most prominent individuals, and not only to those close to him, but the island community. "Eddie has been an asset to Guam in many ways - both personally, politically and as far as the economy is concerned. He is a person to reckon with, a person who has contributed a lot to the community and this of course is his legacy," he explained.

The KUAM family wishes to extend our condolences to the Calvo family.
