Foundation to help locals with cancer to be created in the name of respected businessman, senator, mentor and family man
From the many businesses he founded and worked for to the countless contributions to the community he made and the lives he touched, Edward McDonald Calvo's legacy has forever been etched in the lives of all who knew him.
Calvo died last week in California at the age of 68 after battling cancer, and Monday evening a special ceremony was held in his honor as his family prepares to lay him to rest.
Family and friends of the late Calvo, along with local dignitaries, reflected this evening on the vast accomplishments of a man who was revered by all he met. With flags flown at half-staff at all government agencies and the old airport terminal, the former senator's body arrived on a Continental flight. Family members embraced and mourned as Calvo's body was brought in by the Airport Police.
Calvo was well respected throughout our small island community. A prominent businessman, former senator, father, friend and confidante, Calvo's incredible business prowess turned each of his simple and humble ideas into great successes. Aside from the numerous and generous contributions to the community, Calvo's charisma will be most remembered by those close to him.
Known as "the Big Boss" or "Mr. C" at KUAM, Calvo was a warm, compassionate, lighthearted man who was never too busy to have a one-to-one talk with any of his employees. Always available to lend an open ear and give advice, he frequently imparted words of wisdom unto those of us who sought it.
He had an impressive ability to turn a bad day into a good one with a simple smile and a good joke. His stern glance could easily be broken with his hearty laugh and his effervescent smile, and Calvo put those in his employ at ease with his great sense of humor. Whether it was a small pat on the back, a hug, or a firm handshake, Calvo had a way of touching people's lives with his many acts of kindness and his genuine compassion.
Governor Felix Camacho reflected this evening on his accomplishments and contributions, saying there were too many to name. Calvo's son John also said a few words on behalf of his family, expressing their gratitude to the people of Guam in remembering their father.
It's often said that variety is the spice of life, and Edward M. Calvo managed to add his special touch to everything he did. He was a special man who had a huge heart, always willing to give.
The Calvo family will ensure his legacy lives on with the establishment of the Edward M. Calvo Cancer Foundation to help those on island suffering from cancer. He will truly be missed by all he met, and will never be forgotten.
Rosaries are being said nightly at the Hagatna Cathedral Basillica with a funeral scheduled for this Saturday.
