Former senator, prominent businessman and owner of KUAM Edward M. Calvo passed away in California this morning after battling cancer at the age of 68. "Mr. C." or "Big Eddie" as he was affectionately called was always the consummate boss, displaying a unique persona and admired by all. His passion for running the many businesses he created was outweighed only by his constant love for his family, of which we're proud to have in some small capacity considered ourselves a part.

His unique personality led his to be stern yet patient, focused yet accommodating, all the while genuine in his appreciation of us and concern for our own well being, and for that of our families. Calvo served as a senator in the 14th Guam Legislature.

He is survived by his wife, the former Frances Matias of Maite, as well as his daughter and four sons, and more than fifteen grand- and great-grandchildren.

Governor Felix Camacho proclaimed a state of mourning for the island honoring his passing. The Governor said, "Former senator Eddie Calvo was a true entrepreneur and a leader in every sense of the word. His contributions to the community are too numerous to be named and our island will not be the same without him."

The Governor added former senator Calvo was a role model and an inspiration to our generation who by example proved that we can be successful in this modern world.

Calvo was also the first vice president of Calvo Enterprises, Inc., the principal holding company of the various Calvo businesses in Guam, and chairman of the board of Calvo’s Insurance Underwriters, Inc., Guam's largest insurance agency, and president of Calvo Finance Corporation, a major Guam land developer. He helped organize the Guam Hilton Hotel, the Guam Hotel Okura, and the Guam Cliff Hotel. Calvo also owns a partnership in the pay-per-view movie services offered in all the major hotels on Guam and Saipan and the multi-million dollar Genoa Lakes golf course/resort in Nevada.

Together with his children, he formed E.C. Development, operating a number of commercial buildings, apartment units and retail outlets. In 1996 he was recognized as Guam Business News Executive of the Year.

His spirit and passion for the people of Guam will be missed by all. He will definitely be missed by his family here at KUAM.
