Guahan Alternative Energy, along with Kindo Electric, has partnered up to offer up eco-friendly alternatives for power generation. The former is a locally owned supplier of solar panels and solar water heaters along with wind and micro-hydroelectric generators.
"My power was averaging around $135 a month, and then it fell to $70" - Pat Quintanilla, Guahan Alternative Energy
Pat Quintanilla says he started the company in response to rising fuel and power costs, telling KUAM News, "We're going to be hooked up to the Guam Power Authority no matter what, but with harnessing solar, wind or hydroelectric, we can harness that energy to reduce our power using on the grid configuration or off the grid."
To help get his product into local homes and businesses, Quintanilla has enlisted the help of Kindo Electric to install the energy efficient products. In fact, in his own home he's already installed a wind generator and is impressed by the savings. "I got a 500-watt wind generator and my power was averaging around $135 a month, and then it fell to $70," he recalled.
Now yes, solar, wind and micro hydroelectric systems can be pretty pricey, but Quintanilla says over time customers will recoup that money due to a lower monthly power bill.
Kindo Electric president Ken Leon Guerrero agrees with that concept - in fact, at his business' location in Agat, he's trying to get off the power grid entirely. "We've got a 2-kilowatt wind generator tower there," Leon Guerrero explained. "It puts out almost 20 amps of AC power. I've designed a battery room, we've got 50 batteries coming in and the solar panels behind me are going to be charging the batteries when there's no wind...these systems pay for themselves so fast."
