Guam Public School System superintendent Dr. Nerissa Bretania-Shafer announced her three picks for the deputy superintendent positions Wednesday evening. Bretania-Shafter chose the University of Guam's Dr. Doreen Crisostomo to serve as the deputy in charge of finance and administrative services; Dr. Geraldine James from the Guam Community College will oversee curriculum and instructional improvements; and former principal Arlene Unpingco will take on the job as deputy superintendent for educational support and community learning.
Each say they bring much wealth to the table. Dr. Crisostomo noted, "I think in order to be successful in a position like this, is that you have to understand the government environment. It doesn't run like the public sector. It has its own rules. You have to follow the rules. You can't make your rules and you rely on legislation."
James added, "I bring a K through 16 perspective and an understanding in the environment that we're preparing our students to enter. Also, one of my strengths is a career in technical education because that's what I oversee now. And with the military buildup, that's something we're going to see growth in."
"I bring to the table my experience as a classroom teacher," Unpingco chimed in, "a special education teacher, a consulting resource teacher and also as a school administrator. I will bring and share my leadership skills to ensure that the school principals and teachers are successful."
Each deputy superintendent will earn $110,000.
