Students at Liguan Elementary made it clear last night during a stakeholders meeting that they didn't want their name changed. They sang their school song and recited school spirit cheers, with parents like Lourdes Macarang saying she doesn't support the renaming of Liguan.
"Everybody knows where's the place [sic]," she said. "When people ask 'Where is the place?' we say 'Liguan' even the kids. If you're going to ask them if they want to rename the school, they're going to say 'No, I want to keep it.' It's easy to identify, and I'm proud."
The school was changed to Mildred L. Bamba Elementary, named after a former educator who grew up in Liguan and was a longtime educator on Guam. Her first cousin, Joann Brown, says the community should be educated about Mille's legacy.
"We hope that proper procedures are followed in the future so that something that should be a celebration does not turn out to be a controversy and doesn't pit little children, who in most cases don't know the depth of this issue, against an incredibly wonderful woman who did an awfully lot for the community," said the former senator.
Other stakeholders proposed to have the school's library named after her.
Meanwhile, another meeting is scheduled for tonight at Astumbo Elementary or Maria P. San Nicolas Elementary School.
