Guma Trankilidat residents appeared before lawmakers this morning expressing their concerns about the Guam Housing and Urban Renewal Authority plans to renovate and transform their elderly housing community into a five-story building. Bill 358 would prevent any upward expansion but rather limit it to one story dwellings only.
Guma Trankilidat Resident Association president Napoleon Quinete is in support of the measure, saying, "A majority of the residents only have a few years to live; please allow the residents of Guma Trankilidat to enjoy a happy life before we are gone."
Guma Trankilidat was built in the 1970's, and according to GHURA acting director Benny Pinaula there is a need to provide more homes for Guam's growing elderly population. A request for proposal is currently being solicited for the project, it's the second such RFP after the response to the first one was deemed deficient by the Attorney General's Office.
