"I don't know what the future holds" - John Baldwin, Guam Greyhound
In a move equally unorthodox and unprecedented, just before 2am Wednesday morning Guam Greyhound owner John Baldwin conceded after his Prop A ballot initiative failed to garner enough support from Guam voters. "I'm disappointed Prop A did not pass and that the people of Guam did not see fit to allow us to build the casino and convention center that we wanted to build," he said during an interview with KUAM that was broadcast on KUAM's live coverage of Decision 2008.
Baldwin made the concession speech with almost half of all the precincts being tabulated. He thanked his supporters as well as employees of Greyhound for their hard work during the campaign, noting, "I don't know what the future holds, but I'm grateful for what we've had now. I'm sorry we didn't win, but those are the breaks," the entrepreneur stated.
With 28 out of 58 precincts tabulated, the opponents of Prop A were well ahead, leading with about 59%, while proponents received the remaining 41% votes.
Had it passed, Prop A would have legalized casino gaming at Guam Greyhound. This is the the fourth time that a casino gaming initiative has failed to pass a local election, and the third time in two years.
