Guam - February marks American Heart Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control, heart disease is the number one cause of death and a major cause of disability. It is said that about every 25 seconds, an American will have a coronary event. The most common heart disease in the U.S. is coronary heart disease, which often appears as a heart attack.
There are active steps one can take to prevent and control factors leading to a greater risk by having a healthy diet and lifestyle. Choose lean meats and poultry without skin, select fat-free dairy products, cut back on foods containing vegetable oils, cut back on foods high in dietary cholesterol, cut back on beverages and foods with added sugars, prepare foods with little or no salt. If you drink alcohol, drink in moderation, and keep an eye on your portion sizes.
Risk factors include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, tobacco use and second-hand smoke. Signs and symptoms include chest discomfort, discomfort in other areas in the upper body, shortness of breath, breaking out in cold sweat, nausea and lightheadedness.
The month is celebrated around the world. Take for instance national wear red day. Here, Americans nationwide wear red to show their support for women's heart disease awareness. Department stores like Ross and Macy's have a program where shoppers can donate to the American Heart Association for the cause.
