The 2009 Guam Gatorade Ko'ku Road Race was a big success as part of the 22nd Guam Micronesian Island Fair festivities. Over a 1,000 runners came out in full force, with athletes from Japan making the trip to the island for the race.
Guam's Derek Mandell took the overall 1st place finish in the half-marathon with a time of 1:16:43, setting a new course record. He said, "One guy actually pulled away and had 40 meters on me, but then I caught him with a mile to go and was able to pull away towards the end. I really wanted to win this because you know there were a lot of international runners and I wanted to show them that our island has good athletes and we can compete with those internationally and to defend our island."
Koike Hitomi finished in 1st in the Women's Division of the half-marathon with a time of 1:24:05. The Blazing Geckos won the Ekiden Team Relay with a time of 1:19:46.
